Getting Ready for SOLs with Technology

Just wanted to share a few finished projects (and a few in the making) to help students review for SOL Tests.

barnettclasspic.jpgMrs. Barnett’s Class made a Social Studies SOL Trivia podcast for their 3rd grade penpals (Mrs. Hughe’s Class) at G.W. Carver. You can listen to the version without Penpal names here. Maybe your students could use it for review!

Mrs. Hughes’ Class is currently working on slide shows to review SOL places. I’ve posted an example below. Hopefully they will be sharing their slide shows with their penpals soon!

Mrs. Nave’s Class has recorded a podcast reviewing SOL Famous People in History and it’s just about up.

Mrs. Crotts Class is in the process of recording a podcast on Virginia History. She also plans on reviewing for the test using the Quizdom PRS. We’ll post pictures soon!

Mrs. Stanley and Mrs. Kier’s classes have been working hard on review cards for SOL test using Kidspiration. They’ve created picture representations of the concepts they need to know for the test!

As SOL tests draw near, it’s great to see technology being used for SOL review…especially in creative ways! Have I missed someone? Please add a comment and let me know! I know there are lots of others out there using technology different ways, and we can all learn from each other’s ideas!

Contribute to our Book Review Blog!

Have your students done any type of digital book report this year? If they have, let me know. I will add your students’ reports to your schools’ Book Review Blog. Students can view other’s work on the blog, comment on it, and contribute their own work. I can post slide shows, digital drawings (through kidpix or kidspiration), podcasts, and movies. Students can also look through the listings to find a book they might be interested in reading. I’d like to see this become a nice collection of student work. Check out your schools book reviews from the school homepage under “students” or click below.

A big “thanks” goes out to Mrs. Pillis and Mrs. Dye at GWC and Mrs. Rudasill and Mrs. Wright at East for being the first teachers to contribute student work!

CarverCast Featured in Karen’s Educational Mashups Podcast

The CarverCast Podcast was featured this month in a “mash-up” podcast called Karen’s Educational Mashups…a medley of podcasts based on a theme. Here’s the description of the show:

This podcast features mashups (compilations) of short excerpts from podcasts and other digital content of potential interest to the educational community. It is intended to give you a taste of a various podcasts that you might want to explore further. Most shows will have a theme, such as math, science, student productions, professional development, museum productions, or technology news. Some shows will be focused on podcasts for administrators and teachers, while other shows will highlight podcasts for students or parents. The show is produced and hosted by Karen Fasimpaur of K12 Handhelds.

We were featured on a episode entitled Elementary Student Productions. Check out the episode–you’ll hear our students in the middle!

Listen to the episode

While you’re at it, you might also listen to some of the other cool podcast excerpts on her blog. Maybe they will give you an idea or two that you can try with your students!

Title I Laptop Cart Pictures on Bubble Share

http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/159116/mini?height=238&width=280&gizmo_player=true&size=268×201

I’m hoping to accomplish two things with this blog entry…

First of all, I wanted to remind you that both G.W. Carver and East Salem have Title I laptop carts with 16 BRAND NEW laptops on them. For smaller classes, these carts could be used for whole group instruction, but they could also be used for small groups. Consider using them to do a center or differentiated activity or pairing your students up on them for group work!

Second of all , I wanted to show you this neat website, BubbleShare, that will allow you to make and share slide shows with just a few clicks! I’ve used the site to post these pictures of Mrs. Maxwell’s first grade students using the Title I cart to sort words in Kidspiration!

Cool Technology Projects

Teachers at both East Salem and G.W. Carver have been using technology to enhance their curriculum.  Here are some of the cool technology projects created this month:

•Mrs.  Nave’s class recorded their original Fairy Tale (The Hobbits and the Sweater Maker).

•Second Grade at East Salem has been using the  Smart Board and Graph Club 2.0 to graph their favorite animals.

•Mrs. Craighead’s class wrote and recorded a Crazy Critter Podcast.

•Mrs. Simmon’s class created a President Quiz that you can take online!

•Mrs. Chittum’s class produced a Podcast about the Explorers and Native Americans!

•First and Second Grade classes at GWC have been sorting President Facts with Kidspiration.

•Mrs. Wright’s Class used Scholastic Keys to create a Slide Show about Famous African Americans.  You can see their slides hanging in the hall at GWC.

•Students at both schools have been exploring places using Google Earth, a free program from Google.  Check out some really places to visit with Google Earth here.

•Mrs. Baer and Mrs. Travitz classes continue to correspond using a blog!  Make sure to check out the comments to see their conversations!

•A collaborative project is in the works at GWC for Read Across America Day.  Keep and eye on this page for podcast book reviews by students throughout the school thanks to Mrs. Dye, Mrs. Pillis, and Mrs. Foley.

Some other really neat projects are in the works, including an American Revolution Podcast, Science Report Slide Shows, a Data Collection Project on Weather, Animal Report Slide Shows, Book Reports Slide Shows, and more!  Check back next month to see some examples!

If you know of other technology projects going on that I’ve forgotten to mention here, please drop me a note in the comments section of this post!
