Coin Creations

Students in Mrs. Moretz’ class made coin creations to practice counting money in a very creative way.  Their task was to create a picture using three of each type of coin (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).  The total of the coins in their picture had to be more than $1.99 and less than $4.99.  Here are some examples:

We gave the students an Inspiration file with the coins they needed to help make the process go faster.  It could also be down with a Word Template.

Greece and Rome Geocaching

Third Grade went Geocaching in Mrs. Weikle’s room during their study of Greece and Rome! Using GPS units, students worked in teams to locate hidden boxes outside the school. The boxes contained clues about either Greece or Rome or neither. Students had to figure out which! It was cold, but everyone had a blast!

There are two versions of the activity–one that uses GPS units (Geocaching), and one that uses iPads or iPods with QR code readers.

Geocaching:

1.  Print the cards on different colored tagboard (blue, red, yellow).  Use the Answer Sheet to divide the cards between 6 boxes.

2.  Hide the boxes around the school yard and mark each location with the gps unit.

3.  Divide the students into no more than six groups.  Give students the blank answer sheet, a pencil, gps unit, and an order strip.

4.  Have students find the boxes in the order on the strip.  When they find the box, they read the clues and determine which color card matches which civilization.  They record colors on their answer sheets.

QR Codes

1.  QR cards on tagboard.  Divide them between 6 boxes.

2.  Place the boxes around the room (as stations).

3.  Divide the students into no more than six groups.  Give students the blank answer sheet, a pencil, an iPod/iPad loaded with a QR code reader (we use Inigma).

4.  Have students rotate through the stations and scan the QR codes.  Students must determine which color card matches which civilization.  They record on colors on their answer sheets.

The Big Bad Wolf

Mrs. Downey’s and Mrs. Corbett’s class completed a S.T.E.A.M project centered on a beloved children’s story, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Mrs. Coffey and Mrs. Pettipiece helped too!

Video Trailer (Just a Tease)!

Longer video

After discussing and analyzing the story, and comparing and contrasting it to the real Three Little Pigs story, students spent the next week delving into the world of engineers, architects, construction workers, realtors, consumers, and presenters. Each group of students planned, drew blueprint, tested and revised a house for the Fourth Little Pig.  Each house was created to withstand gusts of wind from The Big Bad Wolf.  They even completed a purchase order and shopped on a budget for the materials to use to construct their house.  They also used the app Pic Collage to create a real estate listing to market their house to potential pig buyers.

To see their pic collages and read more about the project, please visit Mrs. Downey’s blog post about it! You can find it here.

Island of the Blue Dolphins

Students in Mrs. Becker’s Class created Virtual Posters after Reading Island of the Blue Dolphins.  I absolutely love how these turned out.  Students drew pictures, and then used the Pic Collage app on the iPads to take pictures of their illustrations.  They layered them on top of each other, added the text, and added the background.  It’s a great mix of student art work and digital work.  I love them!

Students even posted them to their blogs.  Take a look the link below, and leave them a comment or two on their great work!

Company of London Brochures

Students in one of Mrs. Mulvaney’s Classes became Company of London travel agents!  They created brochures to persuade settlers to come to Jamestown (in 1625).

During this project, students were able to choose how to make their brochures. They could use Microsoft Publisher or the Printing Press from Read, Write, Think. Students also learned to save and use pictures from a copyright friendly website (Pics 4 Learning).

You can look at their creations below!
