The Miniature Earth Project

I’ve been hit a lot lately with references and stories about abundance and “stuff.”  I think there must be a lesson for me to learn because of it…and I’m going to try my best to do so in the coming year.  The latest thing that I’ve run across was a video is from the Miniature Earth Project.  It’s a must-see…

Flip Videos at East Salem

We have two new pieces of equipment at East Salem thanks to a Food Lion Grant. They are called Flip Videos. These cute little devices will record video with the push of a button…and they attach directly to your computer to remove the videos when they are done. And, if that wasn’t cool enough, they also come with their own video editing software, running right on the camera itself (so nothing to install beforehand). When we bought them, our hope was that they’d be used by kids! So, what better way to tell the teachers about them than to let the kids do a demo? I found a few kids from Mrs. Chittum’s class and handed them the cameras…no instructions on how they worked. In less than 30 sec. they were taping one another…then we were off to do interviews! Here’s the video they made to show the teachers how these little gadgets work:

Design Matters (Another Great K-12 Online Conference Presentation)

Just sat down this morning to watch a couple more of the K-12 Online Conference Presentations, and lo and behold, I ran into this one! It’s called Design Matters by Dean Shareski! It’s well worth the watch (and totally follows-up to my last post).

Be sure to also check out the Design Matters Wiki that goes with this presentation.

I also noticed a great link to a site called Color in Motion posted to Pam Elgin’s del.icio.us account that fits right into this “design” theme. It’s a great site about the ways colors impact an audience.

Suggestions from a 5th Grade Teacher

It’s been a crazy week in my personal life, so not much “free time” to really surf the net…and not much time to keep up with K-12 Online Conference. But I’m not worried…that’s the great part…most of the conference (all the presentations, at least) will be there waiting for me when things are more manageable on the home front.

That said, I have had the chance to check in on a couple presentations. This one really caught my attention:

Obstacles to Opportunities Keynote: The Why’s and Wherefore’s

Brian Crosby is a 5th grade teacher in Nevada and a blogger on Learning is Messy. He shows actual projects that he has done with his at risk 5th graders…that’s why I was really drawn to this presentation (click here to see).   It is really worth the watch!!

For a list of other great presentations available through the K12 Online Conference, click here. Pay no attention to dates….once the link is posted, most of these presentations will be available whenever you have the time to watch/listen. There are a few live events…but these too will be archived so you can watch later.
